Pear Trees

Below is a list of pear trees that we offer. European-type pears are designated with an (E) and Asian-type pears with an (A). Asian pears are typically round in shape (similar to apples) and have russet coats. Most Asian pears require another pear (Asian or European) for good pollination. European pears can be self-fertile, but unless noted below, it is recommended that customers have at least two different pear trees to pollinate one another. All pears are grafted onto semi-dwarf rootstock, OHxF97.


Bartlett (E) is a large, yellow pear of excellent quality. It is a favorite for canning and eating. It is a heavy-bearer, but is susceptible to fireblight. It ripens in late August and early September. (excellent pollinator and self-fertile)

 Kieffer (E) is an old pear known by many southerners as the “keeper” pear for its ability to be stored so well. The fruit is bright yellow to bronze in color and large. The texture is firm and its flavor is sweet. It is remarkably  disease resistant and bears early. It ripens in late October. (excellent pollinator and self-fertile)

Korean Giant (A) is a large, russet covered pear of excellent flavor. It is firm and sweet. It ripens in early October and stores well.

Magness (E) is large, green, and sometimes has a red blush. It is known for its fine fresh eating quality with a texture that is rich and juicy. Ripens in early September. (needs a pollinator)

Megietsu (A) is very sweet and aromatic. Fruit is medium in size and brown in  color. Ripens in September and stores well.

 Niitaka (A) is a beautifully colored brown pear of  excellent quality. Round in shape, it is large, sweet, juicy, and firm. It ripens in October and stores exceptionally well.

Plumblee (E) is a  green, firm, sweet, and juicy pear. It is a local pear, having been grown by my  friend’s father for many decades. It makes excellent pear preserves. I like it better than most apples. Tree is disease resistant and hardy. It ripens in late August to early September. (needs a pollinator)

Sanguinole (E) is a  red-fleshed, medium-sized, maroon skinned, sweet pear. It ripens in late August.

Seckel (E) is a small, juicy, very sweet,  reddish-brown pear. It is an old variety that is ideal for canning whole or for using in desserts. The tree is vigorous and productive and has some resistance to fireblight. Fruit ripens in September. (needs a pollinator)

Warren (E) is light yellow, firm, sweet,  and juicy. It is a good keeper and fruits well, even in the southern most areas of the U.S. Ripens in October. (needs a pollinator)
